Available demos

We plan to create four VR demos to highlight the benefits of VR
Running on portable hardware (Vive / Oculus). In principle small datasets.
1) Visualization of electron density for excitons.
Primary dataset: LiF.
No time evolution,
11x11x11 grid of possible hole positions
2) Visualization of electron density for chemical reactions.
Primary dataset: CO2 + CaO
Time evolution, 423 timesteps
3) Visualization of molecular dynamics without electron density; crystal structures (extended xyz files)
4) Visualization of Fermi surfaces (x3d files as used internally by encyclopaedia viewer)
Running on room sized devices (CAVE-like). In principle larger datasets possible
5) Similar demos to 1) and 2), bigger datasets are possible (within reason)
If other datasets are in use by members of NOMAD which were created by similar simulations as the ones described above,
I would like a copy of the data in advance to integrate it and display during the workshop for study.
Contact me (garcia at lrz.de).
Other visualizations provided by the encyclopaedia web will be studied for their suitability to VR implementation.
If suitable ones are found, an effort will be made to prepare additional demos. A call for additional compatible datasets will be made.
A summary of the current demos, with code, is available here

Day 0: 24 April 2017

09:30-11:00 Basics of Remote Visualisation
- Motivation and Problem Statement
- Problems
- Technical approaches
- Applications
11:00-11:15 break
11:15-12:00 Web-based Remote Visualisation
- noVNC
- XPRA
13:00-14:30 Securing Userspaces with Containers
- Docker
- LXC
- Hardware access (GPU)
14:30-14:45 break
14:45-15:30 3D-Scotty
- technical background
- Prototype
15:30 - 15:45 Discussion and Roundup

3D-Scotty is the configuration which allows 3DScover (genome visualization sofware from the MrSymbioMath project which runs in Linux-PC) to be run without modifications using remote visualization (virtual GL).
My original idea was to use this system, and run Vesta with the correct parameters instead of 3DScover.
Even if we have another system working instead, it would be good to see this one in case it inspires us.

Using Public Transport

From Munich Airport: Three stops with commuter line S8 (direction central station) to Ismaning (takes about 13 minutes). From there change to the regional bus number 230 direction Garching-Forschungszentrum, stop at Boltzmannstrae.

Arrival by train: From the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) take the underground line U4/U5 to Odeonsplatz. Change there to U6 direction Garching-Forschungszentrum.

Coming from suburban regions around Munich: With any commuter line (S-Bahn) you first have to go to Marienplatz. Change there to the U6 (Garching-Forschungszentrum).

Other regional bus lines: Bus 690 (Eching-Neufahrn) last station to go. Bus 695 (Kirchdorf-Allershausen-Eching) as well as bus line 219 (Unterschleiheim) go to the bus stop Garching-Hochbrck. From there you can take the underground to Garching-Forschungszentrum (two stops only).

Detailed information regarding time schedules and fares of the Munich Transport System (MVV), please see http://www.mvv-muenchen.de. For a return journey inside the green and white zone, the Day Ticket XXL for 1 or 5 persons will usually be the best choice.
